Tequila in the United States

Tequila is the second largest spirits category in the U.S. by revenue, behind vodka. According to DISCUS, U.S. tequila and mezcal supplier revenue grew from $3.38 billion in 2019 to $6.72 billion in 2024, the only spirits category that grew revenue that year, before slipping 4.1% to $6.4 billion in 2025.

The market is shifting toward smaller brands. Nielsen retail data for 2025 showed the top 20 agave brands, about 83% of sales, down 1.5%, while all other agave brands grew 28.5%.

Blue agave prices

Blue Weber agave takes six to eight years or more to mature, so its price swings in long cycles. After a shortage, agave hit a record of about 32 to 34 pesos per kilo in late 2022. A wave of new planting then flooded the market: prices fell to 16.5 pesos by November 2023, about 5 pesos by February 2024 and roughly 0.8 to 8 pesos in deals during 2025 and 2026. Planted area reached 214,621 hectares at the end of 2023, up 167% since 2014.

Brands, producers and growers

The number of registered tequila brands grew from 2,148 in 2022 to 3,402 by July 2026, while certified producers grew to 229. Many brands share a distillery, which is why the NOM number on the label matters: it tells you who actually made the tequila. About 43,000 agave growers are registered with the CRT.

The Denomination of Origin

Mexico declared tequila a protected Denomination of Origin on December 9, 1974. It covers 181 municipalities in five states: all 125 municipalities of Jalisco, plus 30 in Michoacán, 11 in Tamaulipas, 8 in Nayarit and 7 in Guanajuato. The CRT, founded in 1994, certifies producers and enforces the standard, NOM-006-SCFI-2012. Tequila's Denomination of Origin is recognized in 58 countries, covering about 97.5% of export volume.
